UC Davis Professor John Harvey and Caltrans are working together to manage and maintain California's pavements during the state's budget crisis.  A recent Sacramento Bee article reports that "vans equipped with cameras, lasers and ground-penetrating radar will drive every lane of the state's highways, cataloging cracks and bumps and building a database of the layers of pavement beneath the surface of the road" beginning in late 2009.  This data will be used to prioritize and optimize Caltrans' pavement maintenance efforts as California's budget shrinks.

 Professor Harvey is the principal investigator of the University of California Pavement Research Center.
