Fall Potluck 2009

This Fall quarter's potluck was held at Professor Bruce Kutter's house. This is a tradition in the geotech group that brings together the students and the faculty in a more casual setting. Thanks go out to Professor Kutter and his wife for their hospitality.

Field Trip

GGSS students along with Professor DeJong went on a field trip on Friday, November 13th 2009. The students visited a large trench built for a geotechnical engineering project. The project is aimed at investigating the site stratigraphy by comparing the field tests with observed soil geology in the trench. These types of more extensive site investigations, beyond common CPT/SPT tests, can sometimes become essential for important geotechnical structures concerned with geologic uncertainty.

Professor Idriss Receives ASCE Peck Award

Professor Idriss has been selected as this year's recipient of the ASCE Peck Award.  The ASCE states that "the Ralph B. Peck Award is presented for outstanding contributions to the geotechnical engineering profession through the publication of a thoughtful, carefully researched case history or histories, or the publication of recommended practices or design methodologies based on the evaluation of case histories."  Professor Idriss will receive the award, and give the associated lecture, at the ASCE G-I conference in February. This is another wonderful recognition for his many major contributions to our field.

Congratulations Professor Idriss!
